History

From the first rounds of golf in 1876 to the incorporation of the club in 1894, Murray Bay Golf Club has adapted to the passage of time. It is the third oldest club in America and the oldest still in the same location.

[Jacques Bouchard rented his course for $20 a season from the club’s first president, Dr. D. M. Stimson. The size of the course was slightly less than that of today’s golf course. Golfers struggled not only to lower their margin of error, but also against the cows and sheep that grazed this vast field. width=”1/4″]

Quelques faits saillants :

  • the clubhouse was inaugurated in 1905, followed by tennis and croquet;
    the first hole was recorded in 1897;
    the course was recognized by the Canadian Golf Association in 1925;
    the cows disappeared in 1928, the sprinkler systems just after the First World War and the swimming pool in the mid-sixties.

Gradually, the club opened its doors to local sportsmen and women. The formation of the golfers’ association and the Charlevoix Open contributed to the sport’s popularity. In 1972, Mr. Jean-Arthur Tremblay became the first native-born president. From 35 members at the time of its founding, we now have almost 250 in 2002. The directors have always ensured that the club adapts to economic and social change, a commitment that continues to this day and will ensure the club’s survival.
